At the same time, the public sector market can function as a kind of experimentarium for both the companies and the regions. Even though it will be many years before the new Odense University Hospital accepts its first patients, hospitals in Aabenraa, Esbjerg and Kolding are also due for renovation and rebuilding, and here it would be natural to include various forms of environmental technology, which in this way can be tested out on existing property. "On top of this, it is of course no secret that companies are often judged on the basis of who they have supplied to earlier. So in this case the suppliers would be able to refer to us. On the contrary, he feels that the vision of building a brand-new, CO2-neutral University Hospital in Odense presents a golden opportunity to create a new industrial venture to rival the wind turbine industry for which Denmark has become famous around the world. "You could say that we in the Region of Southern Denmark are pulling out all the stops to encourage improvements in energy efficiency and welfare technology, by developing a new market through intelligent design," says Mikkel Hemmingsen. So how does it all connect? publiC seCtoR maRket The fact is that there are many companies all around the country working with eco-friendly products and services, but the market is as yet too small to kick-start the kind of growth that would put Denmark at the cutting edge of developments. However, all that may be about to change, as the regions invest several hundred millions of euros in building hospitals which they also wish to make as environmentally friendly as possible. The hospitals will be among the biggest customers in the country for innovative green technology, such as new forms of windows, insulation materials, solar cells and underground energy storage and this represents a great business opportunity. The idea is to get the creative process going, and at the same time generate and collect as much knowledge as possible from the start, and establish networks which can be used throughout the many years that construction of the new Odense University Hospital is likely to take.
