O le Mygind, medical director of Thy-Mors Hospital in Thisted, is having fun. A few moments ago he was sitting behind a large sign board in the meeting-room being interviewed via a giant TV screen, in order to demonstrate the hospital's new video conferencing equipment, but now he's standing and laughing at the journalist who is still putting his questions to the TV screen. "That shows how quickly you can get used to it," he says. It's not the first time he has played this little trick on visitors. It is also amazing to see the clarity of the picture on the 52-inch screen, which is used together with a microphone that is so sensitive that you have to be careful not to make too much noise with the coffee cups and teaspoons. "You can very clearly see people's facial expressions, gestures and the look in their eyes, so I feel just like I'm sitting in the same room," says Ole Mygind. seveRal advantages In fact, it is because of the H1N1 influenza virus that the TV screen, camera and microphone have been installed in the meeting-room at Thy-Mors Hospital. "We had been talking about getting this equipment for years," explains Ole Mygind. Distances in north-west Jutland are large, and as both the medical director and many of his colleagues often had to attend meetings in Aalborg including some about subjects which had nothing to do with influenza it meant many hours of driving on the country roads of North Jutland. The total transport time required corresponded to no less than five annual work units, all of which was spent in cars instead of in the hospital wards or offices. But now, with the new video conferencing equipment, the staff at the hospital in Thisted have a lot more time for other tasks, and they also save a lot of money on petrol. This also conveys an environmental benefit, in that less CO2 and other substances are emitted into the atmosphere. easy to use The camera hums and rotates, and a new part of the meeting-room appears on the screen. Ole Mygind can control the equipment from his chair using a remote control. The technology for a video conference is not more difficult to manage than a mobile phone, he says. The challenges he sees in connection with the new technology are more to do with how it is to be disseminated. So far each hospital in the region has a similar video conferencing set, and there are two in the region's central administration. But if the equipment is to be really efficient, there should be one in each meeting room and conference room in the administrative seat of the region, Ole Mygind believes. "Or at least you should have a technician who can get it ready for the meetings. It makes no sense if the people at the other end have to waste more time than I save," he says. telemediCine Today, public health nurses are able to take pictures of patients' sores and send them via a mobile phone to the Sores Department. This kind of telemedicine will become much more common in future as the technology becomes more widespread, Ole Mygind predicts. "We are a small hospital, so we co-operate closely with specialists in Aalborg. With the help of telemedical links, medical subspecialists would be able to remotely monitor cardiograms and scope examinations," says the medical director, who also feels that remote surgery will become more and more common in the future. So far, however, he is happy to be able to avoid the long car journeys to Aalborg.
