Jørn Gettermann, environmental manager for the Capital Region of Denmark The sustainability strategy · the Capital Region of Denmark's "strategy for sustainable Development" was adopted by the Regional Council in February 2009. · the goal is to introduce sustainable operations at the region's hospitals and public institutions. · the region's efforts to promote sustainable development are divided into four main areas: - building operations - new construction projects, renovation and maintenance - Purchasing and new acquisitions - transport · the goals of the sustainability strategy will be translated into concrete actions by the region's staff. · a working group has been appointed, with a representative from each of the region's organisations, to ensure that the strategy is locally anchored. · each organisation in the Region has produced an action plan with initiatives to be set in motion. the final, overall plan will be given political approval at the end of 2009. consultants, who have helped to keep the staff focused by getting them to participate in formulating the strategy at the individual hospitals. "It's been fantastic to see how the hospitals have discarded old habits and taken the leap to innovative thinking. In the end, it's a question of good, old-fashioned management: if your staff get into a rut, give them a friendly shake and keep your end-goal in mind while you work. That's how we can retain our focus and reach our strategic goals for sustainable development," says Jørn Gettermann. Each organisation in the region has already produced proposals for specific action plans to promote sustainability. These plans will now form the basis for a general, overall action plan which will unite the Region in relation to the strategy, as soon as this has been given political approval at the end of 2009. FutuRe ConstRuCtion The Capital Region of Denmark has appointed a working group with a representative from each of its organisations, which will ensure that the sustainability strategy is anchored in the system, so that development continues in the strategy's main areas: building operations, new construction projects, renovation and maintenance, purchasing and new acquisitions, and transport. The groundwork has been laid for introducing a breath of fresh air, and the future promises a lot of work. Creating a co-ordinated environmental policy for the entire region is like rearranging all the systems in a medium-sized provincial town, as the Capital Region of Denmark has an energy consumption and CO2 emissions corresponding to a community of 25-30,000 inhabitants. Consequently, both the sustainability strategy and all the new initiatives in the area must be built up step by step. "The financial gains won't always be obvious with the cutting of the first sod, as they are designed to pay for themselves over time.
