A jumble of bushes and trees absorbs the light, and, together with the broad eaves along the roof, leaves the spaces in the courtyard shrouded in darkness. The contrast could hardly be more pointed as we walk into the middle of the next ward. Here, the old courtyard garden has been roofed. Daylight streams in to the patients standing around a buffet deciding what they will have for lunch, and sitting down at the common tables. One corner is set aside for families with children, where the youngest can play with teddies, play games with their parents, or listen to stories read from a book. Music streams into the new, high-ceilinged space, which is called the sun courtyard. Here the nurses, doctors, health care workers and all the other staff members have been given room to hold meetings, sort out paperwork, and spar with each other. ideas and enthusiasts It all started one day when Olaf Bruun Jørgensen called Liane Schwarz, who worked for the County in those days. The engineering firm of Esbensen Rådgivende Ingeniører A/S had experience with eco-friendly construction but mostly in housing and offices. "We wanted to diversify, and hospitals have a very high level of energy consumption, so there was a potential area for us there," says Olaf Bruun Jørgensen. Since an opportunity arose at the same time to be included in an EU project to promote energysaving solutions in hospitals, a contract was signed. In addition to the solar cells on the roof, Frode Christiansen of the Technical Department at Aabenraa Hospital gives a deep laugh and pats us with his big fist before leading us up the stairs towards the roof of the hospital. It is not far to the solar heat collectors that supply hot water for the patients and staff in the three wards that protrude like fingers from the main building. "It gives a really good return on the investment," says the technician with a broad smile. He admits however that good humour was not exactly what he and most of the other employees at Aabenraa Hospital felt when architect Liane Schwarz from the Region of Southern Denmark and engineer Olaf Bruun Jørgensen from Esbensen Rådgivende Ingeniører A/S set out, on a small budget, to create more room for the staff, patients and relatives, and at the same time keep energy expenditure to a minimum. FRom CouRtyaRd gaRdens to solaR CouRtyaRds "They wanted to remove the courtyard gardens, which I was so fond of," he remembers. There was plenty of muttering in corners. In the years after the turn of the millennium, the south Jutland hospital had already undergone a great many changes in structure, management and tasks, so a comprehensive rebuilding was at the bottom of most people's wish lists. But it was inevitable: the number of beds had to be increased from 87 to 150, and the staff, in particular, soon began to need more space. "It took a long time to convince the staff, but I saw that the courtyard gardens were not being used apart from when someone needed somewhere to From sunshine to hot baths a small solar thermal plant on the roof of aabenraa Hospital supplies energy to heat household water. the hot water is piped from the roof to the basement, where it heats the water that the patients and staff use in the showers and sinks. the installation provides 50 percent of the consumption of the departments that it supplies. the focus was especially on making use of daylight and natural ventilation in the rebuilt parts of Aabenraa Hospital. "It was here that we saw the greatest potential savings, because this is where the energy consumption is particularly high, and the electricity used is expensive and harmful to the environment," Olaf Bruun Jørgensen explains. On top of that the project was based in the existing building, which helped to keep construction costs down, and operations would be cheaper than usual thanks to lower energy consumption. "But for me, it was first and foremost about improving conditions for patients and staff," says Liane Schwarz, who slowly but surely won the staff over through after-work meetings, and by being open towards their wishes.
