By contrast, the new sun courtyards are buzzing with life. A cautious assessment by a nurse even suggests that the prospect of enjoying the large, bright spaces may even motivate patients to get back on their feet more quickly. "What's more, the energy savings have been bigger than we dared hope when we began," says Olaf Bruun Jørgensen. Both he and Liane Schwarz are glad that the project, which was completed in 2005, is no longer anything special for the patients and staff. Today, it is just an everyday thing and a matter of course. the most impoRtant lesson "That is the greatest victory for me. People like to be in the sun courtyards, and they work," says Liane Schwarz. This is not least thanks to the involvement of the hospital staff, feels Olaf Bruun Jørgensen. He emphasises that in technical terms any construction project is unique, but there is one thing he has learned from Aabenraa: "If you want to make energy-conserving buildings which are also beautiful to look at, the various professional groups the client, users, architects and engineers must talk together from the beginning. That is the most important lesson. The Energy agreement in January 2009, Danish Regions and the Ministry of Climate and energy entered into an agreement on energy savings in the regions. the principal content of the agreement is as follows: new hospital construction the parties agreed that ambitious goals must be set for improved energy efficiency in relation to investments in buildings and new equipment. as a general rule, the most energy-efficient technologies and solutions will be selected, taking due account of patient safety, professional standards, financial aspects, etc. Energy-efficient behaviour the regions will continue to implement systematic energy management and internal decision-making processes in order to ensure that the individual institutions are motivated to promote energy savings. Energy-efficient purchasing the regions must purchase energy-efficient products, unless it can be proved that such products fail to live up to important requirements with respect to their function, quality, environmental load or cost-effectiveness. Energy-efficient buildings the regions must implement the economically worthwhile energy savings projects recommended by the energy labelling programme for buildings (the eMo scheme), and which have a repayment time of less than five years. as an element in the agreement, loans will be provided to finance energy-saving measures in existing buildings. loans will be made available for energy-saving measures which follow from the energy labelling programme, and for the replacement of electrical installations with more economic types. A bright idea one of the biggest energy-guzzlers in Danish hospitals is artificial lighting. the sun courtyards at aabenraa Hospital make optimal use of natural daylight, enabling energy consumption of as little as 11.3 kWh per square metre. Let there be dark in addition to the use of daylight, light management systems have also been introduced into the sun courtyards at aabenraa Hospital. this means that the electric lights turn themselves off when there is sufficient daylight in the rooms. in relation to daylight, the greatest challenge has been limiting the sunlight incidence in the courtyards in summer without letting in less light. special sun-screening slats in the skylight, which are controlled by the inside temperature and the sunlight incidence, have solved the problem. The wind of change there are not many people these days who think about the fact that the ventilation in the sun courtyards is completely free of charge. the air is drawn in from outside, then naturally pre-heated in the constant temperature of the basement, routed up via grilles in the floor, and finally expelled from the building through the roof. the system is driven by the effects of the wind on the building. on the coldest winter days, electric convectors in the grilles on the floor add extra warmth to the fresh air, if needed. 22 <a title="Danske Regioner -
